Lichfield based Endoscope-i have developed an endoscopic imaging system for smart phones which will allow doctors to film what they can see and obtain a quick diagnostic from an appropriate hospital clinician.

Through an App on a smart phone a GP unsure of the real diagnosis of a condition can attach the endoscope-i protected technology to their smart phone and take a video of the condition. This video is then via the Cloud sent directly to a specialist clinician to obtain a much quicker diagnosis for their patient. This would eliminate the need for the patient to wait to visit a hospital.

Statistics show that 85% of ear, nose and throat conditions usually need a simple solution which could be treated very quickly by the doctor. This would lead to an 85% reduction in referrals to hospital which for the patient would mean no time worrying and waiting for an appointment, no time off work to go to the hospital and no parking fees!

Early trials are very promising:
“A Secondary Care Consultant(s) step down to the community, comes with an innovative idea that turns out to be an innovative solution and is delivering first class type of care. You communicate, educate and upskilled GPs and you work alongside them. Keeping the whole project patient centred. Our patients are impressed and their feedback has been very positive!!”

Dr Ruiz Martin, GP Higherland Surgery, Newcastle under Lyme

The practice provided an endoscope-i service. This provided a mobile
image enabling a video or still photograph, for example of the ear, which the GP used to discuss any identified concerns or need for referral with the secondary care specialists in Ear Nose and Throat. On occasion reducing the need for patients to attend hospital.

The Care Quality Commission
Endoscope-i contacted the BIC who helped them with their Business Model and secured funding through the BIC’s SBIIS III New Product Development Grant to pay towards Legal Documentation and IT governance of the product so that the App complies with NHS digital infrastructure.
